- Summary
- H5N1 (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) is a highly pathogenic strain of influenza virus that primarily affects birds but has been documented to infect domestic cats and dogs, typically through contact with infected birds, raw poultry, unpasteurized dairy products, or contaminated raw pet food. In cats, infection causes systemic disease with severe lung and brain involvement, and many infected cats have died or been euthanized; outbreaks in cat shelters have recorded near-total mortality. Dogs are also susceptible and can show clinical signs including fever, anorexia, conjunctivitis, labored breathing, and cough, with at least one experimental fatality recorded, though naturally occurring clinical illness in dogs has been less commonly reported than in cats.
