Summary
Salicylic acid is a salicylate compound found in a wide range of products including aspirin, Pepto-Bismol, wintergreen oil, sunscreen, wart removers, skincare products, and topical veterinary preparations. In dogs, toxic doses (as low as 50 mg/kg for GI signs, 100โ€“500 mg/kg for severe effects) cause stomach upset, vomiting with or without blood, decreased appetite, elevated body temperature, and at high doses, damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Cats are especially vulnerable because they lack the enzyme needed to properly metabolize salicylic acid, making even moderate exposures potentially life-threatening, with signs including vomiting, diarrhea (possibly bloody), loss of appetite, and organ damage appearing within four to six hours of ingestion.
