Summary
Bluebells (Hyacinthoides spp.) are flowering plants that are toxic to both dogs and cats. All parts of the plant contain cardiac glycosides (including scillarens and bufadienolides), which disrupt cellular ion pumps and irritate the gastrointestinal tract; the bulbs carry the highest concentration of toxins. In dogs and cats, ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, drooling, lethargy, trembling, and reduced heart rate, with severe cases potentially leading to cardiac effects, seizures, or organ damage; skin contact with the sap may also cause irritation.
