Lilium (lilies)
Summary
Lilium species (true lilies), including Easter, Asiatic, Stargazer, Tiger, Daylily, and Oriental lilies, are extremely toxic plants, particularly to cats. In cats, all parts of the plant—leaves, petals, pollen, and even vase water—contain an unidentified toxin that causes rapid, potentially fatal acute kidney failure within 72 hours of even minimal exposure. Dogs are less severely affected, typically experiencing gastrointestinal upset and, in the case of Lily of the Valley, potentially serious cardiac effects (arrhythmias, seizures), but do not develop kidney failure from true Lilium species. Signs in cats include vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, and progressive kidney failure; signs in dogs vary by lily type but commonly include vomiting, diarrhea, and oral irritation.
