Summary
Finasteride (brand names Proscar®, Propecia®) is a 5α-reductase inhibitor used therapeutically in dogs to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy, but it is classified as a hazardous drug requiring careful handling. It must not be used in young/sexually developing dogs, sexually mature or pregnant female dogs, or dogs with known hypersensitivity, as it poses reproductive risks; however, no general side effects have been reported in dogs at therapeutic doses. In cats, finasteride is not approved for use and accidental ingestion has been associated with hormonal disruption and reported signs including lethargy, inappetence, vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially liver failure.
