- Summary
- Enrofloxacin (brand name Baytril®) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic prescribed to treat bacterial infections in dogs and cats, but it carries significant risk of adverse effects, particularly at elevated doses or in vulnerable animals. In dogs, it is contraindicated during the rapid growth phase due to the risk of abnormal cartilage development, and overdose can cause vomiting, anorexia, ataxia, seizures, and in extreme cases death. Cats are especially vulnerable: doses exceeding 15 mg/kg/day can cause retinotoxic effects including irreversible blindness, and additional neurological signs such as vocalization, aggression, and vestibular disturbances have also been reported.
