- Summary
- Hydrogel cooling products such as migraine/headache gel masks and cooling pet pads contain polyacrylamide hydrogels that may carry acrylamide as a trace manufacturing impurity โ detected in tested samples at levels of 3,600โ13,000 ppm. Acrylamide is a potent neurotoxin absorbed orally, dermally, and through inhalation, with no known antidote; even a small ingested amount can be lethal to dogs and cats. Signs of toxicity begin with vomiting and rapidly progress to ataxia, hyperesthesia, muscle tremors, tachycardia, sensitivity to sound or touch, seizures, and death; some animals that survive may have lasting neurological impairment.
