Summary
Sodium chloride, the primary ingredient in most commercial ice melt and rock salt products, is toxic to dogs and cats when ingested in sufficient quantities; toxicosis may begin at 2โ€“3 g/kg and a dose of 4 g/kg can be fatal. Ingestion causes hypernatremia (elevated blood sodium), leading to osmotic disturbances and neurological damage; skin and paw-pad contact can also cause irritation and chemical burns. Clinical signs include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, seizures, disorientation, increased thirst and urination, cardiac arrhythmias, and potentially death.
