- Summary
- Fertilisers are soil-amendment products containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and may also include iron, copper, zinc, herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides. Small ingestions typically cause mild gastrointestinal irritation, but larger amounts โ especially of concentrated, meal-based, or additive-rich formulas โ can lead to severe iron toxicity, bowel obstruction, pancreatitis, methemoglobinemia (from nitrates), or tremorgenic toxicity if mould is present. Typical signs include vomiting, diarrhoea, increased salivation, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort, and in severe cases tremors, lack of coordination, and seizures, usually appearing within 2โ10 hours of ingestion.
