- Summary
- Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is an essential water-soluble nutrient; when dietary intake is insufficient, cats โ which have particularly high protein-metabolism demands โ are at serious risk of deficiency. Multiple independent research studies document that B6 deficiency in cats causes microcytic hypochromic anemia, oxalate nephrocalcinosis with kidney tubular degeneration, failure to grow, emaciation, ataxia, and progressive neurological signs including convulsions and death. Clinical signs in kittens include depressed body-weight gain, reduced food intake, lowered hemoglobin and hematocrit, elevated urinary oxalate, and abnormal brainstem auditory evoked potentials linked to defective myelination.
