Summary
Elephant ear is a common name for several related plants (including Caladium hortulanum, Colocasia esculenta, and Alocasia spp.) that contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals throughout their leaves, stems, and stalks. When chewed, these needle-like crystals are released into the mouth, causing intense oral irritation, burning, pain and swelling of the mouth, tongue, and lips in both dogs and cats. Typical signs include excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, and in rare cases of large exposure, throat swelling that may lead to breathing difficulty.
