- Summary
- Marijuana (Cannabis sativa) contains THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the primary psychoactive and toxic compound, which affects pets through ingestion of plant material, edibles, oils, or concentrates, as well as inhalation of secondhand smoke. Dogs are more commonly and severely affected due to a higher density of cannabinoid receptors in their brains, but cats are also susceptible; both species experience significant toxicosis even from small amounts, with no established safe dose. Typical clinical signs include ataxia, lethargy, dilated pupils, slowed heart rate, vomiting, tremors, urinary incontinence, and hypothermia; death is extremely rare but has been reported with highly concentrated products such as medical-grade THC edibles.
