Summary
Sodium fluoroacetate (Compound 1080) is a highly toxic pesticide used to control feral and pest animals worldwide. It works by blocking the Krebs (citric acid) cycle via its metabolite fluorocitrate, disrupting cellular energy production and causing central nervous system failure and/or cardiac arrhythmias; dogs and cats are among the most susceptible species, with lethal doses as low as 0.05โ€“0.3 mg/kg body weight. Clinical signs in dogs include vomiting, frenzied or anxious behaviour, convulsions, difficulty breathing, and coma leading to death; cats exhibit disorientation, lethargy, emesis, diarrhoea, hyperexcitability, convulsions, and ventricular arrhythmias, with no proven antidote available for either species.
