- Summary
- Foreign plastic refers to any indigestible plastic object (toys, wrappers, bags, containers, etc.) swallowed by a pet. Because plastic cannot be digested, it can become lodged anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract โ from the esophagus to the small intestine โ causing obstruction, impaired blood flow, intestinal perforation, and potentially fatal sepsis or peritonitis; sharp pieces can also lacerate the mouth, throat, and gut lining. Typical signs include vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, lethargy, inability to defecate, diarrhea, or blood in the stool. Plastic is a non-digestible foreign material that dogs and cats may swallow accidentally or due to behavioral conditions such as pica. Because it cannot be broken down in the gastrointestinal tract, it can cause life-threatening intestinal blockages, esophageal or tracheal obstruction, and internal perforations or lacerations from sharp edges, which may lead to sepsis. Typical signs include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, and inability to defecate; airway obstruction may also occur with flexible plastics such as bags.
