- Psilocybin mushrooms ("magic mushrooms") contain psilocybin and psilocin, which are converted in the body to compounds that activate serotonin receptors and can cause serotonin syndrome in large doses. In both dogs and cats, typical signs include altered mentation, ataxia, mydriasis, vocalization, disorientation, hyperthermia, and tachycardia; tremors and seizures are reported less commonly, and death is rare. Exposures most often occur indoors when pets access an owner's supply, and onset of signs is typically 30–180 minutes after ingestion, lasting 6–24 hours.
