Dumb cane
Summary
Dumb cane (Dieffenbachia) is a popular tropical houseplant that is toxic to both dogs and cats due to insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and a proteolytic enzyme present in its tissues. When chewed or ingested, the crystals are forcefully released and penetrate the mouth, tongue, throat, and gastrointestinal tract, causing intense pain, severe irritation, and inflammation. Typical signs include oral irritation, intense burning of the mouth and lips, excessive drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, and in severe cases, upper airway swelling that can obstruct breathing and be life-threatening.
