- Long, thin, flexible material is one of the most dangerous things a dog or cat can swallow — cats especially. One end often anchors under the tongue or in the stomach while the intestines try to pull the rest through, bunching (plicating) the intestines and sawing through the gut wall over time, which can lead to perforation and life-threatening peritonitis if untreated.
- Notes
- Never pull on visible string, especially if it disappears under the tongue — call a vet immediately instead. Early recognition is the biggest factor in survival.
