Summary
Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) is a broadleaf evergreen shrub whose leaves, stems, and seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides that release hydrogen cyanide when chewed or ingested. Cyanide is a potent cellular poison that blocks oxygen uptake at the cellular level; even a few leaves can be lethal to dogs and cats. Clinical signs include brick-red mucous membranes, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, panting, and shock, with onset within minutes to hours of ingestion. Prunus laurocerasus (Cherry Laurel / English Laurel) is an evergreen shrub widely used as a hedging plant whose stems, leaves, and seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides (notably amygdalin). When plant material is chewed, crushed, or wilted, hydrogen cyanide is released, inhibiting cellular oxygen transport. Clinical signs in dogs and cats include brick-red mucous membranes, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, panting, salivation, vomiting, ataxia, tremors, and in severe cases convulsions, shock, and death.
