- Summary
- Salmonella is a genus of gram-negative bacteria that infects the gastrointestinal tract of dogs and cats, most commonly transmitted through contaminated raw or undercooked meat, pet treats (such as pig ears), contaminated pet food, or contact with infected feces. While many dogs and cats carry the bacteria asymptomatically, illness (salmonellosis) can occur โ particularly in puppies, kittens, elderly, pregnant, or immunocompromised animals โ and in severe cases can progress to septicemia, systemic organ involvement, and death if untreated. Typical signs include acute diarrhea (sometimes bloody), vomiting, fever, lethargy, appetite loss, and dehydration; cats may additionally develop icterus, seizures, or pregnancy complications, and a published case series reported three out of four affected cats died or were euthanized.
