Summary
Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a bacterium naturally present in the intestinal tracts of dogs and cats, but certain pathogenic strains can cause serious infections including colibacillosis, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and life-threatening sepsis, particularly in puppies, kittens, senior, and immunocompromised animals. Infection can occur through ingestion of contaminated raw meat, undercooked food, unpasteurized dairy, or contaminated water, as well as through environmental exposure. Typical signs include watery or bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, dehydration, fever, loss of appetite, and in severe cases bluish gums, cold extremities, and rapid heart rate indicating sepsis.
