Summary
Sodium monofluoroacetate (Compound 1080) is a pesticide widely used in Australia and New Zealand to control feral and pest animals via aerial baiting programmes. Dogs and cats are among the most susceptible species, with a toxic dose as low as 0.05 mg/kg body weight; poisoning most commonly occurs through secondary exposure by ingesting poisoned carcasses, and a single poisoned carcass can contain enough 1080 to kill multiple dogs or cats. There is no proven antidote, and clinical signs โ€” which include vomiting, frenzied behaviour, hypersensitivity, uncontrolled urination and defecation, seizures, difficulty breathing, and coma โ€” progress rapidly, often resulting in death within 2โ€“24 hours of ingestion.
