Summary
Uncooked (raw) bones are animal bones given to pets in their natural, unheated state. Although generally considered less dangerous than cooked bones, they still pose serious risks including choking, tooth fractures, intestinal blockages, and GI tract perforations; raw bones can also harbor harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, and Listeria. Signs of distress in both dogs and cats may include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, pawing at the mouth, difficulty breathing, and abdominal pain.
