- Summary
- Sodium chloride (salt) is toxic to pets when ingested in large quantities, particularly when access to fresh water is limited. In dogs, clinical signs can appear after ingestion of 2โ3 g/kg, and a dose of 4 g/kg can be lethal; cats are similarly vulnerable, with even small amounts of pure salt posing serious risk. Signs of toxicosis include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, lethargy, muscle tremors, seizures, disorientation, and in severe cases convulsions, kidney damage, and death.
